Hi everyone! Dental hygiene is so important in our life that if we don’t apply it every day we could lose our teeth. I know it may sound a little bit blunt, but it is the truth. Taking good care of our teeth ensure that they last all our lives or at least long enough. And it all start with good ol’ dental care. You know the drill by now, brushing your teeth, using dental floss, mouth wash, eating right.
And I wanted to talk about dental hygiene for a bit because it is linked to one condition that can ruin our smile in the long run. That condition is plaque, there is a chance that you have heard of that. Dental plaque is a coat of bacteria that cover your teeth. You know you have plaque when you feel a sticky coat on your teeth. I know, it really feels awful.
How does dental plaque forms?
This is a good question I get from my youngest patients. And it is a good question indeed because teeth loss and many other diseases begin with the simple dental plaque. A short answer is that dental plaque forms from all the bacteria and saliva in our mouth. When we eat, food particles remain stuck in our teeth and this creates an ideal environment to bacteria and germs to reproduce inside our mouth.
One of the foods that are responsible for forming dental plaque in our precious smile is sugar. Sugar is especially abrasive to our teeth and can easily build up bacteria that eventually become dental plaque. What this means is that there are some things that we have to change if we want to avoid plaque.
How to avoid the formation of dental plaque in our teeth
To avoid dental plaque we can start by eating healthier. Drop most of the sugar you are abusing like sodas and candies. Try to replace them with more fruits and vegetables which have less sugar than most of the products we find on the market. Fruits like apple and pears are really good for our teeth because they have natural sugar, which is really good for our body. Besides they help to clean our teeth thanks to the fiber and the stimulation of saliva production.
And that is another secret to have plaque free teeth, saliva. Another method to produce more saliva is to chew gum. But stop there for a second, this does not mean that any chewing gum will save you from dental plaque. It has to be sugar free gum, or you will only help bacteria to ruin your teeth.
Getting rid of nasty habits like cigarettes and tobacco can also help a ton to avoid dental plaque. It is no secret that smoking can seriously ruin your teeth and contribute to tooth loss. So if you really value your teeth you should quit smoking today. You will get rid of dental plaque, bad breath an possible dodge a bullet to your health, meaning that smoking can cause cancer in the long run.
Last but not least you should never stop brushing your teeth at least twice a day. You can complement brushing using dental floss and mouth wash after to leave your smile extra clean and fresh. Aside from that seek your dentist twice a year for regular checkups and cleaning. If there is someone that can work wonders in your smile and stop dental plaque o its tracks is your dentist.
