Sinus Lift Surgery in Los Algodones, Mexico

Dental implants are becoming popular since they are an easy way to restore your smile and recover your oral health. Some patients are not directly eligible for implants and they require previous surgery to avoid implant failure, like a sinus lift surgery. Dr. Xochipilli Bojorquez offers sinus lift in Los Algodones Mexico, a simple procedure that will facilitate dental implants placement.

What is a Sinus Lift surgery?

A Sinus Lift surgery, also known as sinus augmentation, is a very common procedure previous to dental implants. It is done on patients that don’t have enough bone density on the upper jaw to support implants, which is extremely important to have successful dental implant treatment. To create the space, it is needed to move upward, or “lift” the sinus membrane – which gives the name of the surgery -, and later it is filled with bone graft material.

Once the surgery is complete and fully healed, you can be eligible for implant treatment. Now, with enough bone density and space to place the implant, there are higher possibilities of having a successful procedure.

When is sinus lift surgery needed?

A sinus lift surgery is needed when the dentist, after an evaluation with a CT scan or X-rays, determines that there is not enough space between your upper jaw bone and the maxillary sinus cavity. If you want to get a dental implant treatment, then this procedure needs to go first.

This procedure is necessary to not penetrate the sinus cavity with the implant, which could cause infection and lead to implant failure. In order to avoid it, we need to create enough space and bone density, so the implant can have its place. Once it is fully healed, the dentist will find enough bone tissue to place the implant in a way that is stable and secured, ensuring complete osseointegration.

In most cases, patients don’t have enough bone density due to bone loss. This can happen if you are missing teeth in your upper jaw, and since there is no tooth root, the body reabsorbs the bone. Another case is if you have periodontal diseases like periodontitis that can cause damage to the bone.

On some occasions, some patients anatomically have smaller upper jaws and big maxillary sinus, which will also reduce the needed space for implants. This is why it is necessary to perform a careful evaluation to determine if you need the surgery or not.

In all cases, a sinus lift procedure is highly recommended before having dental work done.

Sinus lift procedure

In your first appointment, Dr. Bojorquez will perform an evaluation. To provide an exact diagnosis, she uses a CT scan to get a 3D image of your sinus and upper jaw. This way, the doctor takes an accurate look at your current condition and decides if you are eligible for this surgery.

If you are, then the dentist will choose what is the best source of extra bone in your case and what would be the preparation for the procedure. Generally speaking, dentists can use:

.

  • Autogenous bone, when the patient’s bone tissue is taken and grafted. The graft can be taken from another part of the jaw or chin to avoid making other extraoral wounds.
  • Allograft bone, when the graft is a sample of bone tissue taken from another donor. This sample has been treated to achieve neutrality and immunity to prevent rejection and infection.
  • Alloplastic bone, when the grafting is a synthetic material, is perfectly biocompatible.
  • There is a fourth bone graft material called Xenographic, in which processed bovine bone is used to create a natural substitute for human bone.

How is sinus lift surgery done?

To perform the surgery, the Dr. will place anesthesia so you don’t feel any pain during the surgery. Then, a maxillofacial surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue, which is lifted to expose the bone.

With precision, a small window is cut on the bone and now there is access to the sinus cavity. Carefully, the sinus membrane is lifted, and into the space created between the membrane and the jaw, the bone graft material is placed. Finally, the gum tissue is brought back in place and stitched.

This procedure can take from 4 up to 12 months of recovery. The dentist will explain to you the aftercare requirements and the medication that you will need for proper healing.

In general, the first week it is recommended to have a special diet, avoid drinking with a straw, do not smoke, and avoid blowing the nose or forcefully sneezing since this could move the bone graft material out of its place. Once this process is complete, you can start your implant treatment.
